West Coast 4 Wheel Drive Club

Toys For Tots Event

December 2, 2001

West Coast 4WDC has completed its' 17th annual Toys For Tots event. The weather barely held out without rain, but it did. We got a few drops right when things were wrapping up. I guess we prayed to the right clouds. We had 175 rigs show up for this years event. Needles to say we caused quite a lot of attention as we traveled down town Orange toward our destination at the Santa Ana River Lakes. With the Marines in their Light Armored Vehicles (LAV’s), packing cannons and guns and the procession of four wheel drive rigs, kids, young and old, poured out of restaurants and businesses to watch. Santa was traveling in style in a red sleigh (convertible Ford Mustang), handing out sweets and toys along the route. As has happened in the past, we had folks in the rigs handing out candy and toys along the way and we had bystanders handing back toys to be donated to the event.

Over 17 clubs and California 4-Wheel Drive Association were represented along with several sponsors and individuals that just wanted to enjoy the event. West Coast has 35 members and a few associate members so you know who was going to take the award for the most decorated rigs. With all of the rigs that showed, there is no way to describe them all. From lots of garland to full fledged floats.

We counted over 1,700 toys this day and have since collected several hundred more since the run (over 2,500 total). This was a very patriotic day it seemed with folks paying a lot of attention to the Marines.

Scouts West decided that they would show up in force and wanted a trophy for the most weight instead of the most vehicles again this year. But, this year, they took the prize with most club members. Man, that is a lot of corn binders.

WC4WDC, Inc, collected/purchased over 160 raffle prizes for the event. Before the raffle was started we had some suppliers that donated items, select tickets for the grand prizes, a Warn Winch, two welders, an air compressor, and a Master Pull Winch Rope. Again, this year we held a separate kids raffle where the kids all got one ticket. This part of the event is where WC4WDC club shines as they gave away a gift to every kid. These gifts are all donated by suppliers and WC4WDC members. We are not sure we can keep this up in the future as the amount of kids keeps growing. We think they had a good time.

The plaques were distributed as follows:

Everyone had a great time.

Merry Christmas and have a Happy and Safe New Year.
